WMMA Discussion #29

Girl has some nice mt credentials on paper. If you look at who she fought she got a bit lucky not having to face many Thai or Euro fighters, but still I like to see people getting used to competition/fighting before jumping into mma. Rooting for this one.

Tabatha Ricci vs. Tecia Pennington. The fight seemed easy to score Tecia rounds 1 & 3. Tiny Tornado did more damage in the striking and Ricci's attempts to force Tecia against the fence didn't result in takedowns or damage. Surprised when I heard the decision go as a split decision to Ricci. Not to take anything from Ricci who is tough and threw some hard punches. I feel the judges' scoring inappropriately rewarded walling & stalling. Also the ref could have broken them up more often when they were stalemated against the cage.

JJ Aldrich vs. Veronica Hardy. Hardy won rounds 1 & 2 with effective striking and distance control. Aldrich won round 3. Hardy 2.0 has dramatically improved. Especially her striking. Credit to Aldrich for hanging in there and winning round three. It was pretty clear that Hardy has surpassed her. Hardy is now 3-0 since her return.

Thoughts. Women really need to work on their clinch fighting, I guess this is what happens when most women haven't seen a wrestling mat in their lives. Veronica and Tecia both got stuck on the fence and struggled mightily to get out since they didn't know how to use an underhook to spin out. What you're supposed to do is dig an underhook then lift & spin out on the underhook side to get off the fence, this is cage wrestling 101. Tecia & Hardy would get the underhook then try to spin out on the opposite side which just puts them right back on the fence along with losing the underhook. Neither of them could really get off the fence unless their opponents messed up or let them go.

Learn to do this and you won't be stuck on the fence for most of a round. Not surprisingly, Joanna was pretty good at it.

Yeah - and while Hardy has improved leaps, I am starting to feel JJ is regressing. Her distance control (when training and sparring with Rose) was one of her best assets on the feet, and in her most recent losses - Lipski and Hardy, it was not there. But what do I know, that's just a vague feeling I get. Anwyay. It was decently entertaining fight and glad for Hardy.

You kinda said all there is to say about Ricci/Tecia one. Not gonna cry into my cereal about the decision, cause I like Ricci too.

I guess this is what happens when most women haven't seen a wrestling mat in their lives.

I would consider that as a positive :D

I feel like the elevation could benefit Rose here. Maycee trains in Sacramento, but that’s hardly the same as Denver. Rose is gonna need to show some fire, though.

Southern U.S. based Peak fighting x\crowned two new champions this weekend:

Natalya Speece at flyweight

Natalie Salcedo at atomweight

While I don’t condone tearing apart another fighter’s resume to boost your own fighter, Coach Kavanagh makes a good point here:

what an absolutely bumper crop of women's fights this weekend - heaps of ufc/invicta alum across the board, we get to see val's goddaughter anelya toktogonova, heck even gabi garcia has a "fight"! feeling blessed :D

ufc picks this week:
- i really like vanessa but i feel like she's still building her game, while emily is a more established striker. ducote UD
- ariane carnelossi is back, yay! she didn't fight in 2023 and i wondered if she'd been cut. ariane has fought and beaten better competition than piera so i'll go with ariane. both fighters are aggressive so am expecting a fun fight (pls). carnelossi UD or club n' sub
- tamires is promising for wbw but i don't think she'll trouble melissa. gatto UD
- who gets wheel kicked by amanda ribas and thinks they can beat angela hill? get outta here! angie UD

Danni was also getting Bellator fights at 0-0 because she trained at SBG Ireland & yet Kavanagh was not crying then.

Gatto should just move up. She’s not capable of hanging with the top end of 125ers but probably could hang with the top end at 135. Shes not a small flyweight either.

I believe this is King’s first fight post baby

There is so much wmma going on this weekend, it’s hard to keep track. Octagon, Bellator, UAEW, LFA, A1 Combat on Friday. UFC, Combat Global on Saturday. Shooto, and then Shooto vs WLF on Sunday. There’s something for everyone.

Poor Zulfiya Kurbashova looks like she’s being held against her will <lol>

Bellator was never on the level of UFC, and always used low level local fighters to fill out their undercards and sell tickets. UFC does not follow that model.
