UFC Fight Night 236 Update: Two Bouts Undergo Changes

TRISTEN CRITCHFIELD FEB 6, 2024 COMMENTS

UFC Fight Night 236 has undergone a couple of changes just a few days before the event.

Melsik Baghdasaryan has withdrawn from a proposed featherweight clash against Hyder Amil due to injury and will be replaced by Fernie Garcia. Meanwhile, visa issues have removed Albert Duraev from a middleweight showdown against Robert Bryczek. As result, Ihor Potieria will step in on short notice and face Bryczek.

The Las Vegas-based promotion announced the new matchups on Tuesday. UFC Fight Night 236 takes place at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas on Saturday and is headlined by a middleweight duel pitting Jack Hermansson against Joseph Pyfer. The card streams in its entirety on ESPN+ with prelims beginning at 4 p.m. ET/1 p.m. PT followed by the main draw at 7 p.m. ET/4 p.m. PT.

Garcia has dropped his first three promotional appearances — all via decision. In his last outing, the Fortis MMA product fell to Rinya Nakamura on the scorecards at UFC Fight Night 225.

Amil is undefeated in eight professional outings and is coming off a unanimous decision triumph over Emrah Sonmez on Dana White's Contender Series this past August.

Potieria has lost three of four Octagon appearances since earning a UFC contract on the Contender Series. Most recently, the 27-year-old Ukraine native suffered a second-round TKO loss to Rodolfo Bellato at UFC on ESPN 52 on Dec. 2.

Poland’s Bryczek will take a five-bout winning streak into his Octagon debut. The seven-time Oktagon MMA veteran owns a 17-5 career mark, with 11 of those triumphs coming by way of knockout or technical knockout.

Hopefully. Its on a Sunday for me. If I don't wake up in time for it I will catch the replays and read through the PBPs
Yah, that's what I do when I miss it live. Little known fact: that's why during the PbP I like listing each fight as it's about to start. Wish more posters did that. When reading later we can see what fight's being discussed. Picked that up from our bud @Kryptt. It's better than reading through the PbPs and only seeing No way! or Holy Shit!

Thats actually a great idea! Normally when i watch the PBPs after the fights, I just type in random page numbers hoping to find the right page

Another good suggestion would be to edit the TS after the PBPs AND just include all the fights, as well as which page number each page starts

Good idea! Tricky to execute because everyone may have different settings for number of posts they can view per page. Some mods are setting up other threads like the post-fight press conference or exhausted or wasted after the card. Maybe a sober poster could try doing it on the last page of the thread.

Going big on Hyder Amil, he's going to make a violent statement. Wish I could be there for the after party.

This Texan signed up for his own Alamo. God bless'em but he's got no way out.

Hey David, what are your picks for this event?. I know you are usually bang on when it comes to picks.

Oh this card i would be bad at selecting picks, i don't think i recognize over 90 percent of the names and I am not exaggerating either

These are just my random guesses Jack Hermansson, Dan Ige, Potiera, Brad, Michael Johnson, Armen, Carlos

I have been too busy travelling the to Europe in my $40 million jet to challenge all the European arm wrestling champions and winning trophies and have not been studying UFC fighters too much

Days of being a big fish in a small pond are over for Hyder Amil.

The undefeated 33-year-old featherweight will put his perfect 8-0 record on the line in his Ultimate Fighting Championship debut when he meets Fernie Garcia as part of the UFC Fight Night 236 undercard this Saturday at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas. Amil nailed down his spot on the UFC roster on Week 2 of Dana White’s Contender Series in August, when he took a three-round unanimous decision—29-28, 29-28, 29-28—from Great Britain Top Team’s Emrah Sonmez.

Sonmez certainly made him earn it. The two men were in non-stop motion during a 15-minute struggle marked by scrambles and position changes. Amil appeared to have a little more horsepower with which to work down the stretch. He freed himself from takedowns, made Sonmez pay with some ground-and-pound and even threatened the neck on occasion, doing just enough to sway the judiciary.

“That was a dogfight, for sure,” Amil said at the post-fight press conference. “It was hard to gain separation so I could strike. We ended up getting into more grappling exchanges than I’m accustomed to in my fights. I knew with his style it might be a grinding kind of fight. Not the performance I wanted. I always like to finish people, but I’m glad I got the win [and] I’m glad I got the UFC contract.”

A protégé of Gilbert Melendez, Amil credits the two-time Strikeforce champion and Cesar Gracie-trained Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt with much of his progress as a mixed martial artist. Melendez, now 41, was released by the UFC following a July 2019 decision defeat to Arnold Allen.

“He has a great mind for MMA,” Amil said. “I’m so happy to have him in my corner and to train me up. I’m blessed to be under his guidance.”

Amil enters the UFC humbled by the opportunities he has been given.

“I’m in my 30s and I’m doing this,” he said. “I almost left MMA, but I just gave it another shot, with the support of my team and my family. I’m here now, and I’m going to make the most of it.

Three other rookies are set to join Amil on the bill: middleweight Robert Bryczek, welterweight Carlos Prates and lightweight Bolaji Oki.

Perhaps the most accomplished of the four promotional greenhorns, Bryczek has his sights set on Ihor Potieria—a short-notice replacement for Albert Duraev—in a three-round clash at 185 pounds. The Polish veteran carries a 17-5 record and steps into the Octagon on the strength five consecutive victories, all of them first-round finishes. Bryczek, 33, last appeared on July 28, when he needed just 55 seconds to bury Samuel Kristofic with punches under the Oktagon MMA banner. He has secured 11 of his 17 pro wins by knockout or technical knockout.

Prates, meanwhile, draws retired Houston police officer Trevin Giles in his first Octagon assignment at 170 pounds. The 30-year-old Brazilian steps into the spotlight on a career-best seven-fight winning streak. Prates was awarded a UFC contract in August, when he punched out Mitch Ramirez in the second round of their encounter on Week 4 of Dana White’s Contender Series. Nearly five years now separate “Carlao” from his most recent setback.

In terms of pure upside, Oki may be the most intriguing of the organizational newcomers. The Valon Team prospect marches into his 155-pound clash opposite Damir Hadzovic having rattled off eight straight wins, six of them finishes, since his professional debut resulted in a unanimous decision loss in 2018. Oki, 28, secured his spot on the UFC roster on the Aug. 29 episode of DWCS, where he wrecked Dylan Salvador with a mean left hook to the body 2:46 into the first round of their pairing at the UFC Apex. “The Zulu Warrior” captured the lightweight crown in the Belgium-based Atomic Fighting Championship promotion prior to his arrival.

Great picks, look good to me. You are usually right with these things

Yeah I heard about that, I was checking flight tracker and saw your plane took off from Sydney at 12:45pm and landed at only 12:53pm in Europe... you are so blessed to be so rich and have those special anti-gravity planes that can reach their destinations in a matter of minutes. So honoured and proud to have you as a friend.. I love mega rich people like you.

Thanks im glad to have you a powerful strong friend like you too. I heard you got kicked out of a gym recently for deadlifting 4500 pounds and shattering the ground floors. and when the stff tried to grab and escort you out you accidentally tossed them through the windows and broke it too. Then an armed officer thought u were harming them on purpose and he pulled out a gun and fired but you caught the bullet with two fingers and tapped him on the nose and he went unconscious.

That was insane
