I WANT TO CLARIFY THAT VOLK WILL ALMOST DEFINITELY NOT RETIRE, SO BE REALISTIC WITH YOUR RESPONSES
i noticed going in to this topuria fight that volk has never actually had a great chin. Finished on the regional scene, dropped by mendes, dropped by max twice, dropped to a knee by islam in the first fight, knocked out in their second, and so I thought “the ko wont be an issue, his chin was never all that anyways”
but looking at it now, that’s the exact reason why he got knocked out, and one I completely overlooked. Ilia hits harder than anyone he’s fought before
hes abandoned his high guard for a while now, he always backed up in a straight line, he wasn’t really engaging in the clinch or any kind of grappling
and thinking about it more, islam and mendes are the closest in terms of ko ability to ilia. aldo likes to stand in the middle and range fight, Max uses volume, ortega uses pressure, yair uses speed, tkz uses counter punching
Volk countered all of them with speed except for yair who he outgrappled
volks chin was never truly tested outside of mendes, islam and ilia , the three times he almost got or was finished

what does volk do now? If he retires, he will never get another chance to prove how great he is
if he goes up, he’s facing harder hitters
or he asks for a rematch
if he wants any chance in a potential rematch he has to change his style. his speed is still there, but his chin is much worse now. he has to grapple or get amazing defense. Probably both
im a volk fan, and to me, a rematch is his best bet. If he loses by knockout again, I don’t think it will damage his legacy much more considering we know his chin is completely cracked. Then he can retire. or go on a wrestling heavy run if he wins
